Membership in the Art Group

Well, since i announced the F10 theme vote, we've received a deluge of art group membership requests, some clearly approvable but many not.

Here is a reminder of what you need to do in order to be considered for membership in the FAS art group, as outlined on the Fedora Art Team main wiki page:


  1. Join the mailing list.

  2. Send an introduction to the mailing list, talking about your art/design experience and interests so we'll know what kinds of design tasks you might be interested in helping out with.

  3. Complete a small design task such as one at the design service queue or email the fedora-art-list mailing list to be assigned a task.

  4. Once you've completed an initial draft of your design task, submit it to the fedora-art-list for feedback. Once the task has been completed and approved, you may then proceed with requesting access to the art group (next steps outlined here.



If you have not fulfilled these 4 steps, I will not approve your membership request.

If you have done work for the art team in the past but have not applied for art group membership for whatever reason, or if you have applied but have not been approved, I would greatly appreciate if you would email fedora-art-list with a note saying that you are applying for art group membership, and also noting which work(s) you completed that you'd like considered in your application.

Maybe the solution is to open the vote, even if we are not inclined to contribute in your area of Fedora we might still have an opinion. Do you want other contributors to make decisions on the projects collective future without including you? Probably not so why should the art team be special in this regard. We all love Fedora, we all want to see it be the best it can be, we can all express an opinion - be it on artwork or other issues.

Please free the vote.

As an artist, I don't expect to have a vote on many technical decisions. I wonder how someone without both the experience and inclination to provide artwork for Fedora would have the expertise necessary to make an informed decision.

Irregardless, had you been following fedora-art-list with some regularity, you could have participated in the discussion during which it was decided that the vote would be limited to the art team only.

Everyone has an opinion. Not everyone is willing to put their money where their mouth is. It is a shame.

If you take issue with this process, I'm not the person to talk to. Please speak to the Board.
